The U.S. Department of Education is seeking reviewers to evaluate applications from students applying for the Jacob K. Javits Fellowships. The Javits Fellowships provide funding to students of superior academic ability, selected on the basis of demonstrated achievement, financial need, and exceptional promise—to undertake study at the doctoral level in selected fields of arts, humanities, and social sciences and at the master's level in fine arts.

The Javits application review process involves orientation, reading and evaluating applications, and discussion with other reviewers. Reviewers will evaluate and score applications using the Department of Education's selection criteria.

Those selected to evaluate Javits fellowship applications will have to travel to Washington, D.C., for an orientation day followed by five days devoted to application review (for fiscal 2008 fellowships, the review will be held from November 12–16, 2007). Travel, lodging, and per diem expenses will be covered by the Department of Education, and reviewers will receive an honorarium of $100 per day.

Scholars interested in becoming reviewers for the Javits Fellowships program are requested to complete the online application form at http://webprod.cbmiweb.com/edfrs where first-time users have to register into the Field Reader System. Prospective readers have to provide information about their educational background and expertise, and grant-reading experience. Applications to be a reviewer can be submitted at any time. Selected reviewers will be contacted by e-mail.

Students applying for one of the Javits fellowships must be U.S. citizens or nationals, permanent residents of the United States, or citizens of any one of the Freely Associated States. Awards are made for one year and are renewable for three additional years contingent upon the student making satisfactory progress toward the degree and continued congressional funding for the program.
