    Jim moved to the AHA in 2010 from the Newberry Library, where he was vice president for research and education. He has taught at the University of California, San Diego, and at the University of Chicago, where he remains senior research associate in history. Jim is the author of Land of Hope: Chicago, Black Southerners, and the Great Migration, and A Chance to Make Good: African-Americans, 1900-1929, the coeditor (with Jan Reiff and Ann Keating) of The Encyclopedia of Chicago, and editor of The Frontier in American Culture. He is currently coeditor of the Univ. of Chicago Press series Historical Studies of Urban America. His articles and short essays have focused on various aspects of American urban history, African American history, American ethnicity, and higher education.

  • Julia Brookins

    Julia Brookins has worked at the AHA since November 2010. She staffs the Teaching Division, serves on the editorial board ofPerspectives magazine, and assists in developing and implementing initiatives to advance the historical profession and history in public life. Her current projects include the nationwide history Tuning project, the AHA's project to broaden the career horizons of history PhD's, and an effort to integrate the scholarship of teaching and learning into the disciplinary training of history graduate students. She received a B.A. in history from Harvard University and a Ph.D. in U.S. History from the University of Chicago.

    Matt received a BA in international relations and East Asian studies with a minor in Japanese from Eckerd College in 2007. Matt works in the business office, where he oversees the sales and distribution of publications and assists the business office in its daily operation.

  • Debbie Ann Doyle

    Debbie serves as primary staff for the Association's Research Division and for its standing committees and task forces, including the Committee on Minority Historians, the Committee on Women Historians, the Graduate and Early Career Committee, the Committee on Affiliated Societies, and  the Advisory Committe on Disability. She also serves as the primary contact for public history matters for the Association. She works with the director of meetings on annual meeting functions and is the liaison for the Local Arrangements Committee and the Program Committee.  She serves on the in-house editorial board for Perspectives on History. Debbie received a BA in history from Clark University in 1990, a master's degree from American University in 1993, and her PhD in American history from American University in August 2003.

    Allen edits the print and online versions of Perspectives on History, and supports the AHA's online and social media presence. Allen is completing his doctorate in US history at American University, received his MA from the Institute for English Studies at the University of London, and his BA from St. John's College in Santa Fe. He has worked as an in-house book editor, freelance nonfiction writer, adult basic education instructor/program manager, and as an adjunct lecturer in history.

    Shatha is the associate editor of Perspectives on History. She received her PhD from the University of Chicago Divinity School, where she worked on Muslim and Jewish intellectual history. Her BA is from Mount Holyoke College. From 2009-2013 she was editor of Sightings, which is published by the Martin Marty Center for the Advanced Study of Religion, and she also worked at the University of Chicago Press, Inc. magazine and the journal CrossCurrents

    Randy works closely with the executive director and is responsible for preparing the annual budget, monthly financial statements, supply and procurement of services, supplies, and equipment. He provides administrative support for the Association and prepares financial reports for federal government and private foundations that support the Association.

    Dana provides support to the Executive Director for various managerial functions, along with serving as secretary to the AHA Council.   She oversees the AHA's development efforts and administers the AHA's awards, grants, and fellowships. Dana also serves as the AHA's media relations coordinator. Prior to joining the AHA staff in February 2013, Dana served as the assistant director at the Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition at Yale University, where she planned and directed public and academic programs and initiatives. Dana holds a BA in history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MA in public history from American University.

    Liz started working at the AHA in 1991, as editorial assistant for the Directory of History Departments, Historical Organizations, and Historians. She is now responsible for the employment section online and in Perspectives on History; edits the Directory; and manages the annual meeting Job Center. Liz also maintains professional data in the AHA’s membership records and in the directories of doctoral programs and dissertations, helps update the website, proofreads most AHA publications, and consults on information technology issues in the office.
