The Bernadotte E. Schmitt Grants for Research in European, African, or Asian History 2008 Competition
The Association is pleased to announce the availability of modest
grants to support research in the history of Europe, Africa, and
Asia. The funds for this program come from the earnings of a bequest
from Bernadotte E. Schmitt, president of the Association in 1960.
Only members of the Association are eligible to apply. The
grants are intended to further research in progress and may be used
for travel to a library or archive, for microfilms, photographs,
or photocopying-a list of purposes that is meant to
be merely illustrative, not exhaustive (other expenses, such as child care, can be included). Preference will be given
to those with specific research needs, such as the completion of
a project or completion of a discrete segment thereof. Preference
will be given to Ph.D. candidates and junior scholars.
APPLICATION PROCESS
APPLICATIONS MUST INCLUDE
- application form (login to AHA member section required) with estimated budget;
- curriculum vita (3 - 5 pages maximum);
- statement of no more than 750 words (typed, double-spaced) describing your project, including specific uses to which you'll put the funds and indicating support for the project that you have already received. If special skills, such as foreign language, paleography, or oral history are essential to the project, please indicate your level of proficiency; and
- a one-page bibliography of the most recent, relevant secondary works on the topic. Specifically excluded from funding are help with typing, except for typing of camera-ready copy for an article, dissertation, or book, etc., which would qualify as a technical expense, and use of funds for partial salary replacement.
- The DEADLINE is close of business on February 15,
2008. Mailed and faxed submissions are not accepted.
SELECTION PROCESS
The grants are awarded annually by the Committee on Research Grant Awards. Applicants will be notified by letter after the committee meets to consider applications. Please, no phone calls.
