1989 AHA Job Register

In accordance with AHA policy supporting open listing of employment opportunities, the 1989 Annual Meeting Job Register facility in San Francisco will be made as open as possible. The Job Register will be available for use by any person registered for the annual meeting.

Location

The Job Register will be located in the San Francisco Hilton, ballroom level in the Yosemite Hall and the Dolores and Cabrillo Rooms.

Hours

2 p.m. to 6 p.m.—Wednesday, December 27

9 a.m. to 6 p.m.—Thursday, December 28

9 a.m. to 6 p.m.—Friday, December 29

9 a.m. to 12 noon—Saturday, December 30

The Job Register facility strictly adheres to opening and closing times. No exceptions are made.

Interviewing Institutions

In October, the AHA mailed to the chairs of departments of history the forms necessary for reserving tables and suites and for interviewing. Deadline for reservations is November 17. If you have not received these forms, please contact Perspectives, 400 A St., SE, Washington, DC 20003; 202/544-2422 immediately!

Position Announcements

Notices of openings will be listed in a handout according to location and fields of specialization similar to the Employment Information section in this newsletter. Some departments announcing positions will not interview but will provide an address and request further information from interested candidates.

Interviewing Outside the Job Register

Some employers wish to interview outside the Job Register facility. The Association encourages all interviewing institutions to use the Job Register facility for all interviews. In those cases when the Job Register facility is not used, it is the responsibility of the candidate and the interviewer to make their own arrangements for the interview. The Job Register staff is not responsible for interviews taking place outside the designated Job Register rooms.

Non-Arranged Interviewing

Non-arranged interviews are those that are open on a first come/first served basis during the Annual Meeting. Potential candidates should carefully review all position announcements in the handout pertinent to their capabilities. At this point, candidates should make a note of the name of the position, the name of the institution, and the table number (A-12, B-7, C-1, etc. The letter corresponds to the interview area and the number is the table.). There will be appointment sign-up tables—A, B, and C—and candidates may sign up for only three interviews at a time at each sign-up table. Therefore, non-arranged interviewing at the Job Register is on a limited scale and does not include all positions. Not everyone will be able to obtain an interview. Candidates who plan to attend the meeting without prearranged interviews should come to the meeting prepared with a sufficient supply of c.v.s, notepaper, and writing implements. In the past, many candidates have brought along their appointment booklets and found them to be especially helpful in helping them organize and juggle sessions and interviews.

Prearranged Interviewing at the Job Register

Some interviewing institutions will prearrange interviews with previously contacted candidates. After advertising their positions, many will identify those candidates in whom they are interested and prearrange interviews with them at the annual meeting.
