Michael Galgano

Michael GalganoMichael Galgano is professor and chair of history at James Madison University. He teaches courses in world and European social and cultural history. He has published on gender, childhood, and religion in 17th-century England, and is co-author with J. Chris Arndt and Raymond M. Hyser of Doing History: Research and Writing in the Digital Age (2nd ed., 2012) and author of Liberal Learning and the History Major (2007). The history major at James Madison has been engaged in assessment since the late 1980s. We have followed a value-added model adopted by the university; see “Tilting at Windmills or Harnessing Their Power More Efficiently: Assessment in the History Major,” Perspectives (1988). The Tuning Project represents a more systematic approach and has the potential of involving a new generation of faculty on our campus in thinking together about our program and what we expect students learn from it.
