Steven W. Usselman is professor of history and chair of the School of History, Technology, and Society at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His teaching and research focus is on technical innovation and American political economy, with particular emphasis on the railroad and computer industries. He has written The Challenge of Remaining Innovative: Insights from Twentieth-Century American Business (Stanford Univ. Press, 2009) and Regulating Railroad Innovation: Business, Technology, and Politics in America, 1840–1920 (Cambridge Univ. Press, 2002), which won the OAH Hawley Prize and the Hilton Prize. His courses utilize interdisciplinary approaches intended to promote cooperative experiences involving students majoring in history with those studying other fields. As president of the Society for the History of Technology, he fostered collaborative relationships with the American Society of Engineering Education and the National Academy of Engineering. The Tuning project opens further opportunities for demonstrating the relevance of historical study to a wide range of human endeavors.
