Brendan Gillis oversees the Association’s many teaching and learning initiatives, which celebrate innovative pedagogy and promote the interests of both educators and students of history. He sits on the editorial board of Perspectives in History and contributes to the AHA’s Teaching History with Integrity Initiative, including advocacy in support of efforts to protect teachers from restrictions on academic freedom. In addition to his work at the AHA, Brendan is also Assistant Professor of History (on leave) at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, where he previously served as Assistant Director of the Center for History and Culture of Southeast Texas and the Upper Gulf Coast. His teaching and scholarship focus on cultural histories of law, politics, and local government in colonial North America and the British empire. Brendan is currently completing a book manuscript entitled Empire of Peace: A Global History of the British Magistrate, 1660-1835.
