Event Description
Please join us on April 9 at 7 pm central time to hear from 18 outstanding students nominated by their teachers across the nation for standout research on delegates to the 1977 National Women’s Conference.
The National Women’s Conference was the first and only federally funded conference that provided a policy agenda for “what women want” in the late twentieth century. It was the US response to the United Nations International Women’s Year initiative, delivering The Spirit of Houston Report to President Jimmy Carter outlining over two dozen action areas from family friendly policies to foreign affairs. In fifty-six lead-up conferences in every state and territory and a final four days in Houston when nearly 2000 elected delegates convened, this historic gathering of American women brought together all cross-sections of society.
The Sharing Stories from 1977: Putting the National Women’s Conference on the Map digital humanities project, housed at the University of Houston’s Center for Public History, is committed to documenting and interpreting these participant stories and the legacy of the National Women’s Conference. Please check us out!
Our goal is to empower students as the primary researchers, oral historians, fact checkers, and editors through intergenerational learning and exchange as they capture and interpret National Women’s Conference history.
This year’s annual Student Showcase is a great way to watch student researchers shine. Whether you are a new or returning educator to the Sharing Stories project, a community member interested in learning more, a friend or family member of one of the featured students, or an attendee of the National Women’s Conference, please join us for an evening to remember!
The online event—on April 9 at 7 pm central time—is free and you may register here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/sharing-stories-student-showcase-tickets-1264125255669?aff=oddtdtcreator
